“Are you excited for Lucas to arrive?” Lizzy asked.

“No, why would you think that?” Konstantin’s fingers twitched the curtain that covered the balcony doors open wider.

“So you’re not peering out the window looking for him then?” Lizzy’s voice was dry.

She was seated by the fire, still tapping away on Lucas’ phone, while he was at the window, peering out exactly as she had described. He had been looking for Lucas. He knew that the Compulsion he had used on the young man would ensure Lucas returned to Dyavol. Or it should, but Lucas obviously had unusual traits being the male offspring of a witch. He hoped that Collette wouldn’t have to go collect him. He’d had a hard enough time as it was convincing her not to imprison the young man last night, even though she and Darrell had nearly come to an argument over it.

“I cannot feed from him two nights in a row,” he remarked.

“Feeding from him is the only reason to like him?” Lizzy’s fingers stilled on Lucas’ phone.

“What other reason would there be?”

His innocent eyes? His love for his mother? His defiance?

He let the drapes fall shut and went back to his seat by the fire. He sank down in the high-backed chair. He set his hands lightly on the material. There was still no pain. He tried not to be excited by this fact. He tried not to feel pathetic that simply feeling normal was some kind of win for him.

How the mighty have fallen! I suppose it keeps me humble.

“I think he’s nice.” Lizzy put the phone in her lap. She was wearing jeans and a dark blue babydoll dress. The phone rested in the folds of the dress.

“You did not even speak to him.”

“No, but I’ve gone through his phone, which has his emails, his photos, his texts, his games, his searches, and more,” she explained. “So I have a good feeling about him. In some ways, I probably know more about him than you do.”

Intrigued against his will, he asked, “And what did you discover about him other than he is nice?”

“He loves his mother very much. They talk and text several times a day. They tease each other. I can tell that she worries about him. Not because there’s something wrong with him, but because she doesn’t feel she’s given him a good enough start in life.”

“He worries about her, too, I think.” Konstantin smiled. The young man had practically glowed when he’d spoken about her.

“He doesn’t really have any friends.”

“He’s new in town so that’s not unusual,” he pointed out almost as if in defense of the young man.

“Not just here. But before. He didn’t really have time between school and work. From what I can tell, he and his mother have been two of a kind since his father died when he was ten,” she rattled off more facts about Lucas. His father’s death had left them in debt. Lucas had finished high school, but spent most of his time working so they could get by.
